: any of several enzymes that occur in living tissues (as muscle, brain, yeast) and are important in carbohydrate metabolism in which they accelerate the phosphorylation of hexoses (as the formation of glucose 6-phosphate from glucose and adenosine triphosphate in the presence of magnesium ions or similar cations)
